City of Denham Springs
The City of Denham Springs operates under a Mayor-City Council form of government. The five-member Denham Springs City Council is elected by popular vote. Each council member serves "at large," thus each member represents the entire City, not any one area or demographic. Members serve a term of four years. A City Council member is required to continue to be legally domiciled within the incorporated limits during the term of office.
Each council member serves as a member of the Denham Springs Economic Development District, a member of the Denham Springs Sewerage District No. 1, a member of the Springs at Riverside Landing Economic Development District and as members of the Finance Committee. Meetings of the DSEDD, the DSSD#1, SRLEDD and the Finance Committee are scheduled as needed.
The mayor and city council, along with city officials and supervisors meet twice monthly at 6 p.m. on the second Tuesday and fourth Monday in the Municipal Building, 116 North Range , unless otherwise set by the council. Other special meetings may be held, as needed, to conduct city business.
At all regular meetings of the Council, the Council operates from an itemized agenda. Agendas are posted at the main entrance doors of the Municipal Building and on the city website at least 24 hours prior to the meeting. The agenda for special or emergency meeting is made available to the public as soon as practical prior to the meeting. All meetings of the Council and its committees are open to the public. Public comment or input on any agenda item is allowed prior to the Council vote on that item.
Applications for zoning and other land use changes are made to the Denham Springs Planning Commission and the Denham Springs Zoning Commission. Actions taken by these commissions must be ratified by the City Council.
Ordinances or resolutions are adopted or revised, and appointments and removals are made only by a majority of those present and voting at a lawful meeting of the council. All voting is by roll call and the ayes and nays are recorded in the minutes of the council. All official actions of the Council are published in the Livingston Parish News, the official journal.
The city shall be governed by the provisions of Louisiana R.S. 33:321 et seq., which provisions are commonly known as the Lawrason Act. For more specific duties and legislative powers of the City Council, consult Louisiana R.S. 33:362
